Can an Eye Exam Save Your Life? Maybe!

The eye is an extension of the brain. The eye is the only part of the body that allows physicians to directly see blood vessels “at work.” The health of the blood vessels inside your eye can potentially predict the health of the brain and the rest of your body.

Problems may show up as small dots of blood, narrow or “skinny” arteries, and a build-up of cholesterol in the small blood vessels. Research has recently demonstrated “normal” levels of cholesterol may be still be associated with heart disease. If your eye exam reveals a build-up of cholesterol in the retinal blood vessels, even if your cholesterol is normal, be sure to see your primary care doctor. You may benefit from treatment.

The doctors at The Eye & Laser Center are all medical doctors (M.D.’s). We have all completed medical school training. This is important because the eye may be affected by almost any medical condition. We will take the time to discuss your eye exam and the possible information that it provides about your overall health. It is also important to understand that eye exams will not predict disease in everyone at risk, and an eye exam is not a substitute for regular examinations with your primary care doctor. If a problem is identified, when necessary we will relay this information to your primary care doctor.

We understand that the health of your eye is important, not just to your vision, but to your overall health. Call The Eye & Laser Center today to have a complete eye examination.
